What sandesh actually is
Sandesh (সন্দেশ) is the driest and most refined of the Bengali chhana sweets. Rather than being simmered in syrup, the chhana is worked with sugar over gentle heat and then shaped or pressed into a mould — which is why sandesh often carries a floral or shell pattern on its face.
Its name means news in Bengali, from the custom of carrying sandesh when you arrive with something to announce. It is the gifting sweet above all the others.
How we make it
We make sandesh in small batches to order, so the crumb is still soft when it reaches you — sandesh firms up over time, which is why shop sandesh is often drier than it should be.
Halal, no preservatives, two days' notice on every order.
When people order it
Sandesh is what people order for engagements, new babies, exam results, Eid and Puja gifting, and any visit where arriving empty-handed is not an option.
Questions we get asked
Why is sandesh not in syrup?
Because it isn't cooked in syrup. The chhana is worked with sugar over heat until it holds a shape, which gives sandesh its firm, crumbly texture.
How long does it keep?
Sandesh is at its best in the first couple of days — the crumb is softest when it is fresh, which is why we make it to order.
Can sandesh be moulded for an occasion?
Message us with what you have in mind and your date, and we'll tell you what's possible for that batch.
