What mishti doi actually is
Mishti doi (মিষ্টি দই) is Bengali sweet yogurt: milk reduced down with sugar until it caramelises to a soft amber, then cultured and left to set slowly. It is not a flavoured or stirred yogurt — a proper mishti doi is firm, almost custard-like, with a faint smokiness from the caramelised milk.
In Bengal it is traditionally set in unglazed terracotta pots, because the porous clay draws off a little moisture and thickens the doi as it rests. It is the dessert that closes a Bengali meal, and the sweet most often carried to a family's house as a gift.
How we make it
Ours is made in small batches in a Scarborough kitchen and set after you order it, so it reaches you at its freshest rather than sitting in a display fridge. Milk, sugar and patience — no preservatives and no shortcuts.
Because it is set to order rather than made ahead, we ask for two days' notice on every order.
When people order it
Mishti doi is what people order for Eid and Puja tables, for family dinners, and as a gift to bring to someone's home. It travels well and keeps its set, which makes it the easiest sweet to take across the GTA.
Questions we get asked
How big is a tub?
Each tub is 750 g — comfortably enough for a family of four to six as a dessert.
Is it sweetened yogurt or something different?
It's different. Mishti doi is made by reducing milk with sugar before it is cultured, so the sweetness and the caramel colour are built into the doi itself rather than stirred in afterwards.
Can I order several tubs for an event?
